Tribute to the Glorious Sandhill Cranes
Tribute to the Glorious Sandhill Cranes

All images and field audio were recorded between November, 2007 and
March, 2008 as the Sandhill Cranes returned to their ancient winter
home in the Sacramento Valley. This migration has been going on for at
least 10,000 years. But there are many problems ahead. 95% of the
native wetlands of the valley have been drained, "developed" or planted
with crops that don't support these magnificent creatures. The future is
dire for these ancient creatures. Many thanks to the humans whose efforts
have preserved the remaining habitable areas and to the far sighted
leaders who will assure a future home as humans and cranes coexist in
harmony.

We share these images in an effort to raise consciousness and appreciation.

This video is a slideshow of images and sounds recorded entirely on
public access land in and near the
Cosumnes River Preserve in California's
Central Valley and Delta (including agricultural land surrounding Staten
Island, Twin Cities and Woodbridge Roads).

As we develop more of the thousands of images that we have captured
we will include them in future videos and ultimately in educational
Hybrid DVDs currently under production. It is a work in progress.

Individual images are best viewed in the
image gallery where they can be
enlarged.
The DVD version of the video is stunning and plays very
well on high resolution plasma.
It makes an excellent screen saver for
your television while filling your environment with the natural sounds of
the wetlands.

Many thanks to the folks at Save Our Sandhill Cranes for their inspiration
and dedication. Please visit them a
t www.SOSCranes.org.

You can view web enabled versions of the show here. The video files are
posted in both low and high resolution.
Please allow the file to
completely load before pressing the play button again.
Let the show
run through completely on the first viewing. After the first complete
viewing you will be able to use the player controls.

Scroll down and choose your preferred resolution. Click play control and
go get a cup of coffee while it loads. Turn your volume up and you will
hear the show when it begins. Let the show play through completely
before restarting from the beginning. After it has played through once
press play again to view. If you press play to view the show before it has
completely loaded it will begin to play but stop during playback. If the
show stops during the first playback have another cup and allow it to
finish the download. Then press play again. After the show plays through
completely the first time it will play normally and all of the player
controls will be active.

The high resolution version is 4x sharper than the low resolution version
(with much smoother transitions) but does not compare to the DVD on a
plasma screen with high quality audio equipment (or head phones).

ShareTheRoad Productions' Big Sandhill Crane Picture
Our project will span multiple years and be developed in phases. Phase one is complete. Save Our Sandhill Cranes
(SOSCranes.org) asked for our help to put high quality photos of the cranes on their website. The photos were
shared and the site is being rebuilt using the images.

The organization had another need: a media piece that could serves multiple  functions: As an introduction to the
Sandhill Cranes for public outreach (used during local tabling events and as a fund raiser) and as dynamic media
that can be shared with local interested leaders / policy makers. Using the photos and audio recorded in the fall /
winter of 2007-2008 we created Tribute to the Glorious Sandhill Cranes.

To illustrate a more complete vision of the life cycle of the Greater Sandhill Cranes who spend most of their lives in
California, migrating from their winter homes in the Central Valley to their spring and summer breeding territories
in the extreme northeast area of the state, we traveled to the Modoc National Wildlife Refuge in late May, 2008.
We were overwhelmed by the magic of the Refuge, its fields and wet meadows teaming with wildlife protected by
the Fish and Wildlife Service and the dedicated staff and volunteers who shepard the natural beauty and bounty.
Using our enhanced stereo field audio recording equipment along with photographic images and video we created
Postcard From Modoc; Summer Home of California's Greater Sandhill Cranes. The DVD is being used by the
Refuge staff in the visitors center and for community outreach. It is being offered for sale as a fund raiser for Save
    Our Sandhill Cranes.

The next phases of the project will include more field video and educational components that can be used in
classrooms at the elementary, middle / high school and university levels. Currently we are developing a process to
include DVD video and computer data files on one DVD ROM disk - the Hybrid DVD. Educational material will be
available through a combination of DVD-type menu structures and links embedded within text and photo / video
    graphics.

We hope to demonstrate the power of this Hybrid DVD media to illustrate and highlight  the efforts of individuals
working collectively to promote wildlife conservation. This format can be used by many small grass-roots
organizations to get their message out in a professionally produced yet relatively low budget media package that
can be created within the organization. The entertainment value of the "product" will promote sales and donations
to sustain the development and distribution of the educational component.

At the core we are committed to developing practical, age/message appropriate, accessible media that will serve to
inform and inspire diverse audiences to appreciate and support efforts to conserve crane habitat. We hope to
illustrate and further the efforts of dedicated research and field biologists, conservationist, planners and volunteers
while honoring the Sandhill Cranes' historic and future presence.

We hope that you, too, will come across a path that will guide you toward your highest action potential. Each of
us, individually and collectively must do our part to keep our planet alive and well. This is what we are doing and
we very much appreciate that you have chosen to do it with us. We hope that you enjoy our work and are, in
    some part, inspired to act.

Please feel free to contact us to discuss our work or how we can help you with your efforts.
