The first five bike vids were shot with a Pentax Optio
5Si digital camera in video mode (15 fps). The bike
motion sequences were shot by clamping the camera to
the profile bars of the bike (no charge for the road
vibration). Hand held shooting while riding downhill
really fast is not an option. Clamping the camera to the
top of the helmet produced smooth video, but the
framing was not satisfactory and the geek factor was
extreme. This little beauty fits in an Altoids box.
One of Those Times was shot with the Hoyt
Technologies Pro Helmet Cam which is a 480
lines of resolution Sony EX camera mounted
to a bike helmet. The cam has stereo mics
which are mounted to the rear of the
helmet, but wind noise is a problem (even
with foam screens added).
The recording device and the heart of the
video recording system is a Panasonic PV
GS400 camcorder. The entire rig weighs
about 3 lbs and is a truly mobile video
system.
The helmet cam system can be
worn in a fanny pack allowing
access to controls while on the
bike. Cam operator (Doug)
found the system easy to operate
and control, but the orange
helmet doesn't quite go with his
black / grey color scheme.
In this set up an Audio Technica wireless lavalier mic and a Rode Shotgun VideoMic are mixed
and the output is monitored with an external led VU meter (Sign Video's VU-150).
The bracket which holds the wireless receiver and the VU meter was designed by Custom Brackets
as a flash rotating bracket for digital, 35 mm film and medium format cameras. It weighs only 17
oz. and provides a secure grip and excellent balance.
Although not for sale, this
equipment and operator are

For field wildlife video recording a
domestically assembled (home
made) stereo parabolic mic is held
by the bracket and a 2.2X Raynox
teleconverter is added to the lens.
This rig is perfectly portable but
wind can be a problem and
panning smoothly is difficult due
to the long lens and weight of the
mic. Check out the field vids here.
